Section 29, Canon III

SECTION 29. Duty of confidentiality by former lawyers of a law firm. – A lawyer shall continue to be bound by the rule on confidentiality pertaining to clients of his or her previous law office or law firm. (2023 Code of Professional Responsibility and Accountability or CPRA)

1. Duty of confidentiality by former lawyers of a law firm

Under this section, lawyers “continue to be bound by the rule on confidentiality pertaining to clients of his or her previous law office or law firm.”

Thus, the duty on confidentiality of client’s confidences attaches to the lawyers even after leaving their previous employment or private law practice.
