Section 1, Canon V

SECTION 1. Non-discrimination. – A lawyer shall not decline to represent a person solely on account of the latter’s nationality or ethnicity, sexual orientation or gender identity, religion, disability, age, marital status, social or economic status, political beliefs, or such lawyer’s or the public’s opinion regarding the guilt of said person, except for justifiable reasons. 1. Non-discrimination

a. No discrimination on legal representation

Under this section, lawyers are prohibited from declining to represent a person solely on account of the latter’s:

1) Nationality or ethnicity,

2) Sexual orientation or gender identity,

3) Religion,

4) Disability,

5) Age,

6) Marital status,

7) Social or economic status,

8) Political beliefs, or

9) Such lawyer’s or the public’s opinion regarding the guilt of said person.

b. Exception

The prohibition against discrimination on legal representation is subject to the exception: “except for justifiable reasons.”
