SECTION 36. Responsible use. – A lawyer shall have the duty to understand the benefits, risks, and ethical implications associated with the use of social media. (2023 Code of Professional Responsibility and Accountability or CPRA)
Under this section, lawyers “have the duty to understand the benefits, risks, and ethical implications associated with the use of social media.”
Social media is a tool. It can be used for good or bad, it can be utilized educate or fool people, it can be aid in the dispensing of justice or denying it. Lawyers are mandated to understand the pros and cons, the risks and benefits, as well as the ethical implications.
To guide everyone in a law firm or organization, lawyers should endeavor to create and implement social media policies to properly educate everyone on the responsible use thereof.
